The background check will include a driving history, and personal and professional reference checks.
Candidates will be required to complete a medical and physical exam at their own expense. This will only be done for candidates who pass the background and oral interview phases.
Auxiliary officers do not work paid details.
ALL APPLICANTS ARE SUBJECT TO FINAL APPROVAL FROM THE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR, THE CHIEF OF POLICE, AND THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN. This may mean that a candidate who receives a conditional offer may not receive a final appointment.
We do NOT have a flexible schedule - officers must attend as assigned.
All Auxiliary officers are subject to annual reappointment by the Emergency Management Director AND the Board of Selectmen. Reappointment is not automatic, and may be denied without cause.
Opportunities to earn a promotion within the HPD structure and become eligible for paid police details (Special Officer status) may not occur for several years after completion of initial training, and only after the officer has demonstrated the highest level of commitment and competence. It is a privilege and not a right, and may be withdrawn at any time by the Chief of Police.

The Holbrook Auxiliary Police Department is all volunteer unit which is tasked with the patrol of town owned properties to prevent vandalism. The department focuses its attention on the public school buildings, the parks and playgrounds, the cemeteries, Town Hall, critical infrastructure (the water towers and power substations) and a few other sites. The hours of operation are primarily on Friday and Saturday evenings. The department acts as an extra set of eyes and ears for the on-duty shift officers of the Holbrook Police Department, and when operational is under the direction of the on-duty patrol supervisor. The patrol duties can be very boring and at the same time very rewarding. You are usually not out chasing suspects, making arrests, running into burning buildings, and stopping drug deals. What you are doing is using your presence and good judgment to prevent damage to town property, supporting the on-duty shift in some situations where an extra officer can keep a situation from escalating, directing traffic at an accident scene, and supporting your community.
All members must purchase their own equipment, including firearm. All members must complete a training program required by the Municipal Police Training Commission, and take yearly in-service including CPR and First Aid. There are also additional training requirements and department regulations, including regulations developed by the Police Chief which must be followed. You will be assigned to 2-3 UNPAID shifts per month. Each shift is 5 - 7 hours in length, plus departmental meeting and training sessions, community events, and yearly In-Service classes at one of the regional police academies.
Residents of communities which are within 15 miles of the station but are currently residing at a college in Eastern Massachusetts will be considered to be residents of their home community, and will be considered.
